NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Deployment day for the crew of the USNS Patuxent.
The Force Fleet Replenishment Oiler is headed to the Fifth Fleet area of operations. That covers the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, and parts of the Indian Ocean.
"We're a roving, floating gas station. So we go to the Navy and give them the food and the fuel that they need to sustain the fight," said Captain Randall Rockwood, master of the ship.
While deployed, the Patuxent crew will provide fuel and other supplies to U.S. Navy ships at sea. About 90 crew members will be gone for the holidays, so the ship made sure to pack turkeys.
The ship departed at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and will be out to sea for six months.
