USS Fitzgerald commanding officer temporarily relieved in Yokosuka

YOKOSUKA, Japan (WVEC) -- The commanding officer of the guided-missile destroyer, USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62), was temporarily relieved July 11 for medical reasons.

Cmdr. Bryce Benson suffered injuries sustained during the Fitzgerald's collision with a merchant vessel on June 17.

He is recovering from those injuries and was temporarily relieved by Capt. Jeffrey Bennett, commodore, Destroyer Squadron 15.

Cmrdr. John Fay will assume temporary duties as Fitzgerald's commanding officer.

Fay previously served as commanding officer of the USS Howard (DDG 83).

The USS Fitzgerald is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer forward deployed to Yokosuka since Sept. 2004 as part of the U.S. 7th Fleet.
