NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The USS Oak Hill returns to its homeport Little Creek Sunday after supporting hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
The ship departed from Norfolk on August 31. It was sent to support relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and was redirected to be in position to support efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
The Oak Hill was able to immediately get to work getting clearing equipment ashore and assisting opening roads to move life-sustaining commodities to people across the territory.
Over time more federal aid and local responders were able to preform and maintain route clearance during the recovery phase.
Earlier this week it was announced that the Oak Hill was no longer needed for support.
