Virginia sailor killed in Syria returns home

We've learned that the U.S. service member who was killed in Syria on Thanksgiving was Virginia Beach-based sailor Scott Dayton.

DOVER, Del. (WVEC) -- A Virginia sailor killed on Thanksgiving in Syria has returned home on U.S. soil.

The body of Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott Dayton arrived at Dover Air Force Base on Sunday, where Navy military leaders and his family paid their respects.

The Navy says Dayton's family is making arrangements for a private memorial and funeral service. The family requests continued privacy as they mourn his loss.

Dayton, who lived in Woodbridge, was killed by an improvised bomb Thursday in northern Syria. He was part of a multinational force fighting the Islamic State group in the region.

Dayton was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Two, based in Virginia Beach.
