Move over maple and pumpkin spice. Tim Hortons releases the Buffalo Latte

Some unlikely combinations have found their way into the food sphere recently: unicorns and frappuccinos, sushi and burritos, mermaids and toast. The latest: Buffalo seasoning and coffee. That’s right. The same taste found in Buffalo wings is now available on top of your morning coffee with the Buffalo Latte.

The odd couple is the brainchild of Tim Hortons, the international quick-service chain known for its coffee and doughnut specialties.

For a limited time the company is offering the drink at two of its Buffalo locations, one in Buffalo and the other in Depew, N.Y., the area that is home to the original Buffalo Wings and the first U.S.-based Tim Hortons cafe.

"We decided to surprise our loyal guests by pairing our new handcrafted Latte with the bold Buffalo flavor that’s so iconic to the region," said Stephen Goldstein, regional president of Tim Hortons U.S. division. “The unlikely pairing comes together to create an unexpectedly delicious sweet and spicy treat.”

The concoction, available hot or cold, takes espresso, steamed milk and mocha, and plops a serving of cream on top and sprinkles it with Buffalo seasoning.

Sounds strange? That might be the point.

The new product, with its unique combination of ingredients, will likely generate brand awareness and create a sense of urgency with its expiration date.

“It does drive attention to the company,” said Christine Couvelier, a global culinary trend expert and president of the food development firm Culinary Concierge. “The end result is that it will get people into stores and then they’ll buy something else.”
