Newport News man back to work one day after being shot during robbery

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Customers who shop inside the Green City Supermarket on 25th Street affectionately call the owner Dee.

Dee has owned the store for about seven years. This past Sunday will be a day he never will forget. Two masked gunmen walked into his store.

"They hold a gun. They say, 'Okay, this is a robbery,'" Dee recalled.

The brave store owner told the robbers he could not open the cash register. One of the gunmen followed him behind the counter.

"I told them, 'Okay, okay, just don't shot,'" shared Dee.

He started to scuffle with one of the robbers.

"I push him. When I push him here and then here, I push him, and I told him, 'Get out, and get out,'" Dee said.

Dee told 13News Now the two men fired three shots at him. One bullet hit the floor.

Police said debris hit Dee in the leg.

Dee returned to work the following day. He said he's been robbed before. In that case, he was able to chase the gunman away using pepper spray. Sunday's stick-up was different.

"This time they showed me they want to kill me, exactly they want to kill me," said Dee, who now wears a gun on his hip to protect himself. Despite what happened, he told 13News Now he is not fearful.

"Why afraid? I have my God. Why afraid?" Dee asked.
