Newport News woman charged with maliciously wounding 13-month-old

A Newport news woman was arrested for aggravated malicious wounding of a 13-month-old.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) --  A Newport news woman was arrested for aggravated malicious wounding of a 13-month-old.

According to authorities, on September 14 officers responded to the 100 block of Windsor Castle Drive to a report of a 13-month-old female suffering from a medical issue.

When police arrived the child was being attended to by medics, and the child had multiple visible injures.

The child was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Detectives with the Department’s Special Victims Unit conducted an investigation and determined that the suspect was the sole caretaker of the child.

The investigation led detectives to charge and arrest Kiara Cherae Hall, 26, of the 100 block of Windsor Castle Drive for one count of aggravated malicious wounding.

Hall is the child's caretaker. Investigators say Hall was watching the child while the child's mother is in jail. She was placed in the custody of the Newport News City Jail.

Hall's neighbors didn't want to go on camera Wednesday afternoon, but many of them were in complete shock.

"To hear this is real disturbing, especially when it's that close and you not know it," one neighbor says.

The child remains hospitalized at a local hospital.

Hall has a preliminary hearing scheduled for October 6 at 10:30 a.m.
