Norfolk woman encourages other victims to speak out on 'Me too' movement

The #MeToo campaign started Sunday on Twitter, through a tweet by actress Alyssa Milano, in response to multiple women accusing Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct.

NORFOLK, Va. - In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, thousands of women have been joining the “Me too” movement on social media.

Actress Alyssa Milano asked women who have been sexually assaulted or harassed to speak out and thousands upon thousands of tweets followed.

Norfolk woman Kate Thomas has a story of her own. For years she felt alone and isolated.

“I have a story of sexual abuse from when I was little and again when I was a teenager. I didn’t sleep much because I was afraid,” she said.

She used her gift as an artist to help her through the pain.

“Find a way to flourish. I’m an artist—a big reason why I love to paint—I  wanna  bring forth beauty in a world that's really broken,” she said.

For her the healing process didn't really begin until she started to open up about her experience.

“It’s been a long road of recovery, and a big part of that has been using my voice,” she said.

When she woke up the other morning to the tweets of thousands of other victims, she felt validated, empowered and inspired.

“Somebody coming and saying, ‘Yes I hear your story and I believe you,’ is so empowering. It just links arms with a person and it says, ‘I support you, and I’m here for you.’”

Using the hashtag“Me too”, she joined the social media movement in hopes of helping other women heal.

“A big reaction to the “me too” hashtag has been #IBelieve, and I think that's such a strong way to respond,” she said.

The wounds are deep, and Kate is still healing, but she's encouraged to be living in such a time where women can stand up, have a voice, and make a difference.

“There’s just power in numbers—there’s strength in numbers.”
