Police called to Tallwood Street, suspicious situation

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Norfolk Police and fire rescue were on scene for a suspicious situation on Wednesday.

At 11 a.m., police were called to the 1100 block of Tallwood Street because a man was seen entering a home with a placard out front saying no one should enter.

When police arrived, no one answered the door. A short time later they saw someone moving inside.

Police asked the man to come to the door, but he refused and began setting fires inside the home.

Authorities feared for his safety, as they went inside the man confronted them with a knife.

According to officers, the man had multiple self-inflicted wounds, and he was taken into custody without incident.

The 57-year-old was transported to a local hospital for the cuts, and an evaluation.

Charges have not been secured, and his name has not been released.

No further information has been released.
