Young boy drowns in Chesapeake pool

Staying safe in the pool this summer

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Police say a child has drown in a back yard swimming pool.

It happened around 11 a.m. Sunday morning in Chesapeake, in the 2800 block of Omar Street.

Police are still investigating, and there are no charges at this time.

It's a reminder for parents to be extra vigilant this holiday weekend: when it comes to kids and swimming pools, it is important to have effective supervision.

Parents, check for fences and alarms. It is also a good idea to enroll your child in swim lessons.

And before they jump in, make sure they are under the supervision of lifeguards who know CPR.

In Virginia Beach, group swim lessons are offered for ages 1-14+.

In Norfolk, swim lessons are offered at the city's four indoor pools, and three outdoor pools.

Swim lessons are also offered for all ages at YMCAs throughout Hampton Roads.

Virginia Beach and Norfolk offer swim lessons through the city.
