Police recover drowning victim from James river

JAMES CITY COUNTY, vA. (WVEC) -- Virginia State Police have recovered a drowning victim from the James River on Wednesday.

According to authorities, on August 2 at 7:45 a.m., Fire and EMS rescue responded to Robious Landing Park on the James river for possible drowning. 

Witnesses said a man entered the river to try and retrieve a kayak that had floated away. The man went under and never resurfaced.

Water rescue personnel from Chesterfield Fire and EMS, the Virginia State Police and Henrico Fire searched for the victim. His body was located at 3:25 p.m. 

The victim was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who will determine manner and cause of death. 

The victim has been identified as Gerald Franklin Manikus, 62, of Maidens Virginia.

Police say foul play is not suspected.

No further information was released.
