19-year-old wins Poquoson City Council seat

POQUOSON, Va. (WVEC) Thomas Cannella, II, who is 19 years old, won the Central District Race in Poquoson.

Cannella is a student at Christopher Newport University, majoring in political science, and also is a football coach at Poquoson High School, where he graduated from in 2015.

"Everything I've done in my 19 years has prepared me to run this campaign and serve on council," Cannella wrote on his campaign Facebook page. 

He told 13News Now, "Poquoson has given me so much and I don't think it's too early to give back."

Cannella said it will be a challenge balancing college, work, and being a city councilman, but he's ready to get get to it come January.

He said his vision is to keep taxes low, improve salaries of city employees, and focus on the quality of education.

Cannella, a Poquoson native, beat out his opponent, Kevin Brennan in a roughly 2 to 1 vote.
