PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Move over Dr. Dolittle, Portsmouth Police and Animal Control are on the scene.
Three officers helped multiple animals around the city over the course of one very busy Saturday.
At 12:30 p.m. on June 17, Officer Saunders arrived to help an injured opossum on the side of the road. He found the animal had died from its injuries, but noticed it appeared to have a pouch. When he looked inside, he found 11 babies inside. Saunders rescued the baby animals and took them to animal control.
Shortly after the baby opossums were rescued, Animal Control Officer Currie help find and rescue a pet pig that has gotten loose around the city.
Almost 3 hours after the opossums were rescued, another officer rescued a baby bird on Columbia Street.
All of the animals that were found and rescued are now safe and receiving the treatment they need.
