Power surge leaves residents in the dark in James City Co.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- Residents were left in the dark after a power surge Wednesday evening. 

According to city officials, the power was knocked out after an extensive power surge lead to several electrical shorts and structure fires. 

Dominion Energy was made aware of the situation and began working to fix the issue. 

The Kingsmill Community Services Associated warned residents that due to the power outage the KCSA and KMPS McLaws Circle offices became unavailable. The offices will reopen Thursday at 8 a.m. is the situation has been resolved at that time. 

According to Battalion Chief Al Catlett, there were multiple 911 calls, including:

  • 27 calls for electrical shorts, smell of smoke, etc.
  • 13 alarms 
  • 2 calls for structure fires
  • 2 calls for transformer fires

Dominion crews are investigating what caused the power sure and conditions have since returned to normal.
