Pro-Confederate monument to occur in Richmond this weekend

Tomorrow in Richmond police admit they don't know what to expect when a pro-confederate group rallies in the city.

RICHMOND, VA. (WVEC) -- Richmond city leaders have a warning for anyone who may be planning to become violent this weekend during a pro-confederate rally that is being planned on Monument Avenue, "If you don't respect our city, law enforcement will lock you up," warned Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney.

In fact, Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham said the city has been planning with other law agencies for weeks for the rally to keep the peace.

A group from Tennessee called the New Confederate States of America joined by another group from Florida will protest along Monument Avenue in Richmond.

However, local Richmond confederate groups are discouraging people from attending Saturday's rally,.

"Anyone on the Southern Heritage movement showing up at these monuments like this Saturday is not a good idea, that's not a good thing to do," said Barry Isenhour of the Virginia Flaggers.

Tara Brandau, who is with New Confederate States of America, is welcoming people to the rally.

"Everybody is welcome to come to the rally that is not racist, does not have all that hate and terrorism in their blood. I denounce the KKK. League of the South, White Supremacy, Black Lives Matter, Black Panthers, Antifa, I denounce them all," stated Brandau.

In the meantime, people who plan to attend will not be allowed to carry things like shields, bats or helmets.

"If someone has a mask on, we're not asking them to take them off. they're being arrested!" exclaimed Chief Durham which was followed by applause at a Thursday night community meeting. However, people who have permits can carry guns.
