Putting a spin on baseball technology

It's the newest thing in baseball analytics. Yakkertech is the name of the device used to calculate the spin rate of a baseball.

Maybe it's the next big thing in baseball analytics. Yakkertech is the device and the Peninsula Pilots are putting it through a trial run. Johhny Lumsden is on the Yakkertech team and says, "The eyeball test can only go so far in observing, but you need raw data and devices that do not lie."

Yakkertech can calculate the spin rate of a baseball after it leaves the pitcher's hand. As Lumsden says, "It's able to detect the red threads on a baseball."

The idea is is not so much to determine the speed but instead the spin on a baseball. That comes in handy when you're trying to perfect your curve ball and any pitch that has movement.

Practically speaking the pitching coach and/or player would take the data and use it to figure out what technique gives them the best result when making their pitch.
