Raccoon found near I-64 on ramp tests positive for rabies

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WVEC) -- The Peninsula Health District is warning residents near the I-64 on ramp coming from Busch Gardens headed towards Hampton that a raccoon in the area has tested positive for the rabies virus. 

If anyone in the area believes they, or their pet, have been exposed to this critter should contact the health department at (757) 603-4277. If you try to contact the department after hours, call James City County Animal Control at (757) 253-1800.

Contact with the raccoon includes being bitten, scratched or touching the animal's saliva or open wounds.

Rabies is a fatal put preventable disease, usually carried by mammals in the wild.

Prevention guidelines include to vaccinate your pets, report all exposures you have with animals, and enjoy wildlife from a distance.
