Raccoon positive for rabies found in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- A raccoon positive for rabies was captured in a neighborhood in Portsmouth.

On August 8, the Portsmouth Bureau of Animal Control captured a raccoon on Columbia Street.

After testing the critter for rabies, the results came back on Friday positive.

The Health Department strongly advises that Portsmouth residents and visitors take the following steps to prevent families and pets from being exposed to rabies:

  • Eliminate Outdoor Food Sources Around the Home
  • Avoid Contact Between Yourself and Wild Animals or Stray Dogs and Cats
  • Vaccinate All Pets Against Rabies, It's the Law
