PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- After three years of work, the Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway is finally set to open sometime next month.

The one-mile stretch connects 164 to 264, with the hope of easing congestion at different points that cross the Elizabeth River.

"It is only one mile but I think the connectivity that it brings, it's going to be a game changer," said Dan Norman, the construction manager.

He said this roughly $300 million project didn't solely just focus on the on expressway, but also had ground work, like a plaza near High Street, and also added lanes on 264 and widening shoulders.

There are also DMS signs up on the highway to alert drivers when there are backups at the tunnels.

"I think what we'll see now with opening the MLK and providing that additional connectivity and the option for drivers, if there is congestion, they can use this facility to divert," said Norman.

He said a good example of how this express will help is how within the last week, there were two crashes that caused heavy traffic at each of the tunnels.

With MLK expressway, it will allow drivers to divert to the other tunnel.
