'Sound the Alarm' Red Cross calls for volunteers

American Red Cross needs volunteers for their 3 week event, "Sound the Alarm" to help install smoke alarms across the country and in Hampton Roads.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- American Red Cross is looking for volunteers nationwide for the event 'Sound the Alarm.'

'Sound the Alarm' will install 100,000 free smoke alarms in more than 100 communities across the country in three weeks.

In Virginia, 350 volunteers are needed for the smoke alarm installation event on October 7 in Norfolk, Newport News, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.

The event in Coastal Virginia is part of a nationwide series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events to be held between September 23 and October 15.

This year the Red Cross hopes to install its one-millionth free smoke alarm since its Home Fire Campaign launched in 2014.

In the past year, the Red Cross of Virginia has created over 4,414 home fire preparedness plans and installed over 12,000 free smoke alarms.

According to the Red Cross, every day seven people die in home fires, most in homes that lack working smoke alarms.
