VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A lottery ticket worth $1 million was laying in Aubrey Barbour's home for five months and he had no idea.
Barbour purchased the winning Virginia's New Year's Millionaire Raffle ticket at a Speedway in Lynchburg while visiting family over Thanksgiving.
His ticket was one of the top three prize winners drawn on January 1, except the ticket remained forgotten in a drawer.
It wasn't until months later, while looking for his checkbook that he stumbled upon the ticket.
"Something just told me to go check it," said Barbour.
The retired Navy chief petty officer went to the Virginia Lottery's customer service center in Hampton and learned just how valuable the ticket was.
"I think I'm dreaming," said Barbour as he filled out the claim for his prize.
Barbour said he has no immediate plans for the money.
