Voters frustrated over unresponsive online registration system

VIRGINIA (WVEC) -- Residents of Virginia were met with frustration when the online voter registration system began experiencing technical difficulties, Monday.

The Department of Elections took to Facebook to update residents on the problem, claiming that the issues were due to an unprecedented level of activity.

When 13News Now contacted the Department of Elections, they replied with this statement:

"The Department of Elections online voter registration system is experiencing an unprecedented activity level that has caused it to slow down and sometimes be completely unresponsive. We are working to quickly make changes to vote.virginia.gov that will allow voters to submit online registrations if they still need to register or update their information before tonight’s deadline. These changes will temporarily disable the ability to look at your existing voter record or conduct other business on the site. You should see the changes to the website shortly. If someone can’t get their form to submit using vote.virginia.gov, they should wait a few minutes and try again. The registration deadline is 11:59pm tonight."

However, voters took to Facebook hours later, claiming to still experience the same technical difficulties. Some saying that they had been attempting to register for up to five hours, with zero response.

No extensions have been announced, the registration deadline is 11:59 p.m. October 17.
