VSU promises to hire more police after 2 shootings

Officials at Virginia State University will hire ten new police officers in the wake of two shootings that happened on campus in less than a week.

PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - A university in Virginia says it will immediately hire 10 new police officers in the wake of two shootings on campus.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Friday that Virginia State University also plans to increase lighting around campus and install more security cameras.

The two shootings at the school in Petersburg left two people wounded. One of them was a VSU student.

The latest shooting occurred Thursday evening. A VSU student was shot in the abdomen but is expected to survive.

The other recent shooting occurred on Oct. 14 in the parking lot of VSU's football stadium after a homecoming game.

No arrests have been made. VSU police have teamed with Chesterfield police in investigating both incidents. Police have described both shootings as isolated incidents.
