Woman sentenced in golf cart theft from former Olympian Frank Havens

(Delmarvanow.com) -- A woman police said was involved with stealing and destroying a golf cart belonging to a 92-year-old former Olympic gold medal canoeing champion will spend 10 days in jail. Police said she also shoplifted from Wal-Mart.

Police said Miranda Gibbons, 27, of Melfa along with Tyler J. Ladson, stole a golf cart in October 2016 belonging to Harborton resident Frank Havens, who walks with a cane and used the cart daily to get from his home to the waterfront where he goes out in his canoe.

Havens won the 1952 gold medal for sprint canoe and a silver medal in 1948.

Police said the cart was stolen and then run into the creek, where it was later recovered by divers. It was completely destroyed.

Gibbons was sentenced to 10 days to serve with two months, 20 days suspended in Accomack County court on Sept. 14. She paid $240 of the $339 owed in restitution for the crimes, said defense attorney Theresa Bliss.

Ladson, who pleaded guilty to two felonies and one misdemeanor June 15, has not been sentenced.
