Elizabeth City football player breaks long snap world record

Before he even hits the gridiron, this player is breaking world records.

ELIZABETH CITY, NC (WVEC) -- Erik Lawson is on his way to East Carolina University next year. The 22-year-old from Elizabeth City signed on to play football as the school's new long snapper.

But Erik recently gained national attention before even stepping onto the field in Greenville.

Erik's father, Dave Lawson, sent 13News Now video of Erik breaking the Guinness World Record for the American football long snap.

The snap was measured at 36.9 meters.

“I didn’t think about it, I just did it," said Erik.

With two coaches from other schools, three spotters and a high school referee as witnesses, Erik topped the world record previously held by a long snapper for the Seattle Seahawks.

According to Dave, Erik accomplished the feat on his first attempt.

"He's like a machine," said Dave.
