Once upon a time Hampton University was the perfect fit with the other HBCU schools in the MEAC. That time lasted 22 years. H.U. is now ready for a change. They're leaving the MEAC for the Big South Conference.
The move becomes effective on July 1, 2018.
The Big South has 4 schools from each of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
You're wondering why the move? Hampton athletic director Eugene Marshall points to three things. He says there will be fewer missed class due to less travel and with that, less travel cost. He also says, "It allows us to expand our footprint. It allows us to do more nationally."
Marshall says you can still expect the Pirates to schedule game with their rivals at Norfolk State.
