This week's HS GameTime Coach's Corner puts the spotlight on Alexis Brion in her first season as gymnastics coach at Green Run High School.

Alexis Brion knows all about the gymnastics powerhouses at the Beach, namely Cox, Ocean Lakes, Kellam and Kempsville, where she attended as a student. Now, Brion has returned as a coach in her first season at Green Run, a school picked to finish no higher than the middle of the pack in this year's district race.

But Brion, who made her mark locally as a national elite-level gymnast for a local club and earned a scholarship to Alabama, where she played a huge role leading the Crimson Tide to the 2002 NCAA Championship as a freshman, hopes to apply what she learned as a gymnast to her new role for the Lady Stallions.

Brion says it is rewarding to coach the girls and teach them what she has learned, that education is important, and that motivation and discipline are vital.

But she also adds her immediate goals are not necessarily a district title, states or nationals. Instead, Brion wants her squad to have fun, work hard and improve scores each meet during the season.

After talking withAlexis Brionand seeing how her squad responds to her coaching, it looks like Green Run is poised to take each challenge one meet at a time and become a serious challenger in the always competitive Beach District and beyond.
