NORFOLK - One person was killed when a car hit a tree following a brief pursuit by police that started in Norfolk, went into Va. Beach and ended back in Norfolk early Friday.

Police say 28-year-old Eric Ahmed-Zahrani Johnson of 1725 S. Lakeland Dr. in Norfolk was killed in the crash that occurred at Shore Drive and E. Little Creek Road around 2:15 a.m.

According to Norfolk Police they saw a speeding car going east on Ocean View Avenue and tried to stop it. The officers stopped the pursuit when the vehicle accelerated, said spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson.

The vehicle got onto E. Little Creek Road, crossed into Va. Beach and then returned to Norfolk on that same street. It hit one vehicle during that time and lost control, careening into a tree, according to police.

'There was no active pursuit of the vehicle at the time of the crash,' Parker-Chesson stressed.

The two people in the vehicle that was allegedly struck by Johnson sustained minor injuries. They were treated at the scene and released.

Va. Beach Police say a passenger in Johnson's car jumped out on Diamond Springs Road near Shore Drive. That person's status isn't known.

The name of the victim hasn't been released and the investigation continues.
