NORFOLK-- At first, a man's death was believed to be a suicide. Now, Norfolk police say someone killed him.

23-year-old Kendrick M. Downing was found on Marlfield Drive around 11:00 p.m Sunday, February 3. He died at the hospital.

Officer Chris Amos says a gun was found his body and, early on, investigators believed he'd shot himself. However, that changed after police interviewed witnesses and results of the autopsy were in.

Police said Tuesday that Downing was shot by 38-year-old Bryan Joseph Sweatt after they got into a dispute during a party.

A neighbor said it was a Super Bowl party. She said she heard two men arguing outside and then heard a gunshot.

Sweatt, who lives in Chesapeake, is charged with murder and use or display of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
