SOUTHERN SHORES, NC-A day in the water turned deadly for a man in the Outer Banks.

Officials say 52-year-old Kenneth Mead of Mclean was apparently body surfing Thursday afternoon and suffered face and neck injures.

'C-spine injuries are not uncommon in the Outer Banks because of the big drop off when you get in the water,' Police Chief David Kole said.

Kole said a doctor and nurse were on the beach near 12th Avenue and rushed to help him.

Mead received CPR on the scene and was rushed to Outer Banks Hospital where he died later that day.
