NORFOLK-Dozens of people were evacuated from businesses in downtown Norfolk - some of those people were in the middle of dentist appointments - because of an unusual odor that permeated a building.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue crews were called to 142 W. West York Street around 10:10 a.m. and evacuated everyone in the building as a precaution.

Dr. John Nottingham says he was in the middle of doing a filling when he was told to get everyone out.

'I don't know what will happen for the rest of the day,' he stated.

The owner of Norfolk Grill, Ted Papafil, has his employees wait outside while firefighters went through his restaurant.

By 11:45 a.m., crews were still working to find the source of the smell, but they confirm it is not a gas leak. They're using huge fans to ventilate the building.

Battalion Chief Julian Williamson says air quality tests showed no hazards in the air.

He expects everyone should be back by 12:30 p.m.

Anyone who has an appointment in any business in that building - 142 W. York Street - should call ahead before showing up.
