WILLIAMSBURG -- A coyote found in Williamsburg has tested positive for rabies.

People who live or work in the area of Cedar Grove Cemetery, Henry Street and South England Street may have come across the animal recently.

The Peninsula Health District says anyone who may have been bitten, scratched or had other close contact with the animal or knows that their pet did should call 757-603-4277. After hours, call the James City County/Williamsburg Animal Control at 757-253-1800.

Health officials will be contacting people in those areas to advise them of the results of testing.

An advisory from the City of Williamsburg Monday afternoon said the coyote's body was found on College of William & Mary property adjacent to Cedar Grove Cemetery.

The advisory said it matched the description of an aggressive coyote seen in the area last week.
