NORFOLK -- Carnival Cruise Lines is returning to Norfolk in 2015. That news comes after the cruise line decided to drop service this year.

A tweet from the City Thursday said Carnival Splendor will take passengers on a Bermuda cruise, three 5-day Bahamas cruises, a 6-day Bahamas cruise and a 2-day Cruise to Nowhere. There will also be 20+ cruise ship stopovers through 2015.

No specific dates were announced.

Officials say they expect nearly 60,000 cruise passengers to visit downtown Norfolk.

In January, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced that Carnival would return to the city. He cited a 2013 study by the Virginia Tourism Corporation that said about 8.1 million adults within a five-hour drive of Norfolk are likely to take a cruise over the next three years.

Carnival Splendor, which accommodates 3,006 passengers and has 1,150 crew members, will sail from Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center and 2015 will be its 13th year of offering cruises from Norfolk.
