NORFOLK -- Old Dominion University and Norfolk police responded to reports of an off-campus shooting early Saturday morning.

Police were alerted just before 1:00 a.m. about gunfire in the area of 42nd Street and Colley Avenue.

ODU students received a safety alert email advising that a group of males was fighting in the street when multiple shots were fired.

The suspects reportedly ran away from the scene before police arrived.

According to the school's safety alert message, one person was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim is not affiliated with ODU.

No additional details have been released about suspects.

Several cars in the area also were damaged by bullets.

'I immediately woke up and I was like that sounded like it came from my front porch,' Karonn Mosley said.

A thankful Mosley, who told 13News Now he heard at least 15 shots outside his home on 42nd Street, was one of the owners whose car was hit.

'I could've been in my car. I could've just been parking or pulling up for any matter, and those bullets would've been inside of me instead of my car so, I can't even be mad about shattered glass. Like I said, it's been fixed now.'

The university is warning students to take precautions by contacting police to report any suspicious people or activities. Students are also being encouraged to use the University Safe Ride van service.

Anyone with information about the shooting should contact ODUPolice at (757) 683-4000 or the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (562-5887).
