NEWPORT NEWS -- A tactical situation that unfolded shortly after 9 a.m. on a busy stretch of highway in Newport News ended peacefully about two hours later.

According to a spokesperson, the Newport News Police Department's Fugitive Apprehension Unit responded to information that 25 year-old Kwaume Edwards, who was wanted in Hampton on homicide charges, as well as charges in Newport News, was in a room at the Extended Stay America hotel in the 2300 block of Hornsby Lane, roughly across Jefferson Ave. from Patrick Henry Mall.

Once their tactical units were in place, they made contact with Edwards, who had been characterized by Hampton Police as 'armed and dangerous.' About an hour and a half after the incident began, a female exited the room. A short time later, Edwards came out and was taken into custody.

No one was injured in the incident.

Edwards was wanted in the May 15 shooting death of Jonathan Coles at a home on Newport News Avenue in Hampton.

After his surrender Saturday, Edwards was turned over to Hampton Police to first face the Murder charge, but will also be charged in Newport News with: Assault on a family member, Unauthorized use of a vehicle, Brandishing a firearm and probation violations.
