NEWPORT NEWS-In an effort to cut costs, about 1,200 salaried workers at Huntington-Ingalls Newport News Shipyard are being offered buyout packages.

Those who are eligible do everything from waterfront manufacturing duties to working in the yard's legal offices.

'Reducing our salaried workforce is one way we can remain competitive in an increasingly challenging marketplace. It will help us meet our financial objectives and position our business for future success,' shipyard spokeswoman Christie Miller told WVEC.com.

The offer is being made to employees who will be age 60 or older by December 31 and those who accept it will be off the job by December 30, she added.

Applications to participate in the voluntary separation are due by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28.

Miller stressed that Newport News Shipyard is still hiring for select salaried positions, mainly entry-level.

There is no change to hourly trades hiring.

The yard has 21,000 employees and is the only shipyard in the U.S. that builds the Navy's aircraft carriers.
