CHESAPEAKE - A man escaped fire in his Chesapeake home on Wednesday.

Firefighters got to the S. Battlefield Blvd. home, in the Hickory section, around 4:50 a.m. and saw smoke coming from the two-story home.

Capt. Scott Saunders with the Chesapeake Fire Department says the man reported a cat was unaccounted for, but he wasn't sure if it got out on its own.

The homeowner has made arrangements to stay elsewhere because the house is badly damaged.

Capt. Saunders says the department is prepared to deal with fires in cold weather.

'We bring our rehab truck out and we rotate crews to keep them warm. We have warm drinks and protein bars for them,' he explained

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

If you live or work in that area, police advised at 7:30 a.m. that Battlefield Blvd. South between Hill Crest Parkway and Centerville Turnpike is closed in both directions.
