ACCOMACK COUNTY - Police were investigating an arson at an Accomack County church Wednesday night.

It was not immediately clear if it was related to the more than 40 arsons in the county.

Leatherbury Methodist Church is in the 21,000 block of Deep Creek Road in Onancock. Police were alerted to the incident shortly before 2 p.m.

Based on evidence collected at the scene, it appeared the fire was set at some point within 24 hours of it being discovered.

According to State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller, damage was minimal to the church and no one was injured

'You know, you start messing with God's house then you're going to pay,' said resident Debbie Bundick.

There have been 48 arsons to mostly abandoned structures in Accomack County since last November. There have been no arrests.

Bill Poe hopes those involved are arrested soon.

It's incredible. It's got to be somebody with definite knowledge with the fire department and how things work.'

Va. State Police say there are about 600 vacant buildings in the county. Anyone with information about the fires can call Virginia State Police at 1-800-582-8350 or (757) 424-6820 or the Accomack County Sheriff's Office at (757) 787-1131. You can also use the new TIP LINE: (757) 655-1437 to Call/Text/Email. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Accomack County Sheriff Todd Godwin said, 'I hope the increase in the reward will help persuade these residents to now come forward. These fires must be stopped for the safety of our property owners, for the safety of our volunteer firefighters, and for the safety and well-being of our close-knit community.'
