UPDATE 1/9: A Portsmouth jury found Jeffrey Smith guilty Thursday of attempted capital murder, robbery, burglary, wearing a mask in a public or private place, shooting at a police vehicle, shooting from a vehicle and destruction of property.

The jury recommended a sentence of life plus an additional 52 years.

PORTSMOUTH - Three people are in custody following a reported home invasion in Portsmouth.

Police were called to the 500 block of Columbia Street around 11:45 p.m. Thursday and saw three suspects getting into a vehicle near the home.

Shortly after, one of the suspects allegedly began shooting at officers.

Police say a car chase ensued and ended when the suspects hit a parked car. All three suspects ran but were arrested within minutes.

No injuries were reported.

Keyon T. Melton, 26, of the 500 block of Spectator Street in Portsmouth, has been charged with use or display of a firearm in the commission of a felony, felony eluding, conspiracy to commit a felony, attempt to commit a capital offense and robbery and burglary.

Nathan C. Smith, Sr, 31, of the 600 block of Jefferson Street in Portsmouth has been charged with use or display of a firearm in the commission of a felony, conspiracy to commit a felony, attempt to commit a capital offense, and robbery and burglary.

Jeffrey W. Smith, 25, of the 6000 block of Churchland Boulevard in Portsmouth has been charged with use or display of a firearm in the commission of a felony, conspiracy to commit a felony, attempt to commit a capital offense and robbery and burglary.
