HATTERAS INLET -- The Coast Guard helped a 52-year-old diver who showed signs of decompression sickness Sunday off the coast of North Carolina.

The captain of the dive boat Under Pressure contacted Coast Guard North Carolina Command Center watchstanders at about 3:00 p.m. He said the diver needed medical attention. At the time, the boat was 18 miles southeast of Hatteras Inlet.

Sector watchstanders launched a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet to assist. The crew reached the dive boat at about 90 minutes after its captain contacted them.

Crew members took the diver the station where a Coast Guard aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina was waiting. The aircrew flew him to Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk.
