ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY -- Search crews recovered a second body at a home on WaltersHighway in Carrsville late Friday. Hours earlier, deputies found the body of 58-year-old Sandy Joyner inside the house. Sheriff Mark Marshall told 13News it appeared Joyner died of massive blunt force trauma.
Her husband, 62-year-old Joe Joyner, was missing all day Friday, prompting an extensive search of the couple's 100-acre property.
'I called from my house 'fore I left and didn't get no answer, so I, 'Let me drive on out there,' said Richard Amos, who expected to see Joe Joyner Friday morning.
Amos refers to him as his 'vegetable man,' because he got a lot of produce from Joyner who farmed the property on Walters Highway.
Amos drove past the property before deputies arrived.
'Truck windows were rolled down, garage door wide open. Truck backed up there, and the wife's car was sitting parked over there.I had a good -- 'Well, he home.''
'They said, 'Well, she didn't come to work today,' and the three ladies came out here to see why she didn't come to work,' shared neighbor Annie Watson. 'When they came to find out why, they couldn't get no response. What do they do? They call the police.'
Watson and others told 13News Sandy Joyner is a nurse at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
Isle of Wight County deputies are investigating the deaths along with State Police and Southampton and Franklin authorities.
They have not said if the second body found is that of Joyner who ran for the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors last year.
