NORFOLK -- Fire damaged a vacant Norfolk home early Thursday.

Firefighters say no one was in the home at 525 W. 26th Street when they arrived around 4:00 a.m.

Smoke and flames were coming from the attic when crews got to the scene in the Park Place neighborhood.

There was some damage to the house next door and those residents were evacuated as a precaution.

'it doesn't look very bad from the front, we just saw smoke. Then we walked around to the side and looked from the back angle of the house and it was pretty terrifying just to see the house aflame and being right next to our home. Thank goodness it was empty,' said Kelly Jackson.

W. 26th Street was closed from Morton to Colonial avenues.

Firefighters said they had the fire under control at 5:15 a.m.

People in the area say the home hadn't been lived in for about a month.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
