NEWPORT NEWS - An alert neighbor helped catch a thief who police say had returned to the scene of his earlier crime.

29-year-old Jonathon Ince was arrested New Year's morning as he tried to leave a home on Sun Haven Court, said policespokesman Lou Thurston.

A neighbor called police after seeing something strange at the home around 6:00 a.m.

'Investigating officers found a broken glass door and saw that the lights were on. As they approached the house, they saw someone moving inside and the lights went off,' he stated.

Ince tried to leave through a back door, but after seeing an officer, he ran to the front door and was stopped near the staircase, Thurston added.

He had property that had been reported stolen from a car at the home between December 3 and 5.

Ince, who lives in Newport News, was charged with one count each of burglary, grand larceny, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools (all felonies) and misdemeanor damage to property.

Police say Ince worked as a security guard in Va. Beach.
