NORFOLK-- An inmate who had just been admitted to the Norfolk jail Friday morning was found hanging in his cell in the afternoon.

According to jail spokesperson, Paula Miller, the inmate had been brought to the jail around 3 a.m. on the charges of Rape, 3 counts of Sodomy, 1 count of Aggravated Sexual Battery, and 1 count Taking Indecent Liberties with a Minor.

The inmate's name is not being released until next of kin is notified.

Miller said that a mental health worker found the inmate about 2 p.m. hanging by a bedsheet in his cell.

Miller also said that deputies check the cells twice an hour and in addition a mental health worker has periodic visits to each inmate. It was during one of these visits that the inmate was found.

Police spokesperson, Chris Amos, says the death is under investigation.
