MATTHEWS COUNTY -- A young driver was killed after losing control of an SUV early Saturday morning on Route 14.

Virginia State Police say 18-year-old Deanna Christy Haywood died after a single vehicle crash around 9:00 a.m.

Haywood was driving eastbound when she lost control of a 1996 Ford Explorer, ran off the road and over corrected. Investigators believe she then ran off the left side of the road and overturned.

According to a press release Haywood was ejected from the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt. Police say she died on impact.

It has been determined that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Route 14 was briefly shut down while crews investigated the accident.
