ELIZABETH CITY -- A residence security officer at Elizabeth City State University has been suspended without pay after he was charged with attacking a student.

Anthony Butler, Jr. is charged with breaking and entering and sexual battery, allegedly forcing himself on a woman in Butler Hall two times in the past few months.

Butler, a former basketball player at ECSU, also has been banned from continuing to volunteer as an assistant basketball coach for the Lady Vikings.

'They just pretty much let us know that if we had any questions, we can go to the Communications Office, and we can talk to them or the counselors if we had any questions,' said student Rahterika Rawls.

The ECSU freshman recalled meeting Butler during summer orientation.

'He made sure we knew everything about campus that we needed to know, and we were able to function well, being new students here,' said Rawls. 'Overall, he was a nice person, and he was really cool, and he even did a little cookout for us which was really nice. We appreciated it a lot.'

Butler is due in court on May 16.
