The baby's mother continues to recover from 2nd degree burns sustanined while trying to resuce him.

VBFD says there was a working smoke detector in the apartment. The cause is still under investigation.

VIRGINIA BEACH- Firefighters were investigating what caused the fire that killed an 11-month-old child Thursday night in the Campus East area of Va. Beach.

Crews were called to a townhouse in the 5400 block of Scholarship Drive around 9:30 p.m. and quickly brought the fire under control.

Battalion Chief Jack Crandell said they found the child's lifeless body on the second floor, where the fire is believed the fire started.

Two police officers and a female relative were injured trying to save those inside the house.

Neighbor Andre Bullock ran outside and saw people and smoke.

'I saw the mother she was hysterical trying to get into the house,' Bullock said.

Another neighbor, Henry Quintero, wanted to help the family.

'I tried asking them if I could assist them and help them in any way I can,' he said.

One officer was taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation and the other was treated on the scene. The family member was taken to the hospital also was treated for smoke inhalation and burns.

The Red Cross says it provided food, clothing and health-related items to four adults.

Smoke was removed from two adjoining homes.
