NEWPORT NEWS-A handful of Newport News residents were frustrated when their water service was turned off even though they had paid their bills.

Now they know why.

Police say 45-year-old Jason John Jacobsen stole the meters off their Denbigh-area homes.

Lee Ann Hartmann with Newport News Waterworks says crews checked customers' homes and found that the meters were missing

According to Det. Tom LeNoir, Jacobsen removed seven meters between July 20-23, taking an hour at each home, and he got $30 in total for the scrap brass.

He's charged with seven counts each of petit larceny and tampering with a metering device. Det. LeNoir says Jacobsen is a repeat offender and faces up to 42 years behind bars if convicted on all charges.
