PORTSMOUTH-Firefighters battled the cold as well as flames early Thursday at a home in Portsmouth.

Fire badly damaged a detached garage at the home on Taft Drive. Crews were called around 5 a.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure.

They were able to keep the fire from spreading into the main house.

The people in the home got out and were staying warm in one of their cars just down the street, according to firefighters.

Because of the extreme temperatures, the department's rehab truck was brought to the scene to give crews a change to get out of the cold.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
