NORFOLK-The power has gone out for thousands of Dominion Power customers since he snow started falling Tuesday.

'We've had more than 5,000 customers affected since 6 p.m. yesterday. We're down to 17 as of 7:30 a.m.,' said spokeswoman Bonita Billingsley Harris.

She said the biggest trouble was in northern North Carolina - the Elizabeth City area - where about 2,500 customers lost power. Other outages were reported in the Widgeon Road area of Norfolk, in Hampton, Norfolk and Va. Beach.

The cold temperature and amount of snow has caused some equipment failure, Harris said.
